Weekly Letter 10.23.17

Dear Families:

A big thank you to all who made Apple Fest the fun day that it was!  Your effort and energy bring joy to the kids and funds for the schools.  It’s a win win combination.

Our children are off and running, thanks to Brandon, our PE teacher’s enthusiasm and leadership.  Mighty Milers is now renamed, “Rising New York Road Runners,” and your children are participating in this citywide initiative.

We began with a town meeting on October 3, in which Brandon inspired our third to fifth graders to run.  He also spoke directly with our second and first graders during their gym classes, explaining the Rising New York Road Runners program so that even they could participate.

When our students graduate from BNS, we want them ready to exercise and do sports on their own, so they can be healthy and active as adolescents and later, as adults.  Our PE program with its emphasis on running is foundational, creating young people who see the need for regular exercise, young people who enjoy a daily stroll, run or bike ride.

Our elementary aged children are learning the ‘FUNdamentals’ of athletic development.  As runners, our students have goals, hoping to complete 26.2 miles before the year’s end.  We even have children who exceed this goal, some of whom will become ambassadors for the Rising Runners program.

Our students run in the ballfield and the small yard and the gym.  In addition to running during the PE period, they run at recess, accumulating their miles.  Special events include the BNS turkey trot and the Reindeer Run at Prospect Park.

It’s fun and it’s healthy.  Encourage your child and set an example.  Make running and exercise a part of your and their lives.

All for now,

Anna
