Weekly Letter 9.18.17

Dear Families:

At the beginning of every school year, we take the time to review routines and expectations for members of our school community.  We do this through community building activities and town meetings.  These take place while the teachers are conferring with you.  On Friday we met with our fourth graders, asking them what they thought were the values of Brooklyn New School.  The children responded with ideas, which included friendship, kindness, teamwork, respect, community, taking care of nature and the environment, support, and taking care of the self.  At the end of the meeting, a child ran up to me and whispered in my ear, “We forgot to say peace.”

Peace, of course, was the theme of our whole school sing (grades one to five), which was held on September 11.  Many thanks to David, our new music teacher for leading us in song and for teaching us the Spanish lyrics to This Land is Your Land.

Just as we start the year with meetings with all of our students, so do we start with meetings for all of the parents.  We were pleased with the high level of parent participation in the two PTA meetings held on Thursday, and hope that this spirit of involvement can continue.  We take the time now to remind you that tomorrow is Curriculum Night for kindergarten to grade five and Curriculum Morning for pre-k families.  Do try to come.  Teachers will present specific information on reading, writing, math, social studies and science.  They will discuss concrete topics such as homework and trips, while also offering their insights on how children learn and the importance of inquiry in elementary school.  We strongly encourage you to attend as your knowledge of what is happening in school is fundamental to your child thriving here at BNS.

A reminder that on Monday, September 25,  the Annual Book Fair begins in our beautiful library.  Thanks to Monique for organizing this.  It’s open that whole week from 8:10 to 4:00 except on Friday when it closes at 11:10.  Enjoy!

Remember to keep Tuesday mornings open for BNS as this is the day that we have set aside for parents.  We will be offering workshops, grade level breakfasts and PTA meetings, all of which will take place in the art room, room 103.  Please note that the next parent breakfast is scheduled for September 26 and is for kindergarten families.

All for now,

Anna

Reminder:

Please fill out the lunch forms.  Even though school lunch is now free, the information is still used for school funding. Be sure to fill out all forms sent home and return them to your child's teacher as soon as possible.

Quote of the Week:

When Bill’s first grade class went for its first visit to the school farm, some of the children tasted basil leaves.  Upon eating them, Cassidee Yates remarked,  "These are so freakin' good."
